Hang in There

It's that time of year when deadlines are quickly approaching. When anxiety can escalate. When patience dwindles. It can be hard to focus and hang on, and being aware of your emotions and pressures can be challenging.

We get it. And we have staff all over the place who can be a listening ear and support you as you finish out the term. Stop by the library and say hi to Anna, Siong, and Mei Ling. Go see our student support staff. Or chat to your teacher. We know there is a lot on, and we're keen as to help support you!

IMPORTANT End of Semester News

With the semester one coming to a close, please note the following:

Semester one ends Friday, 28 June.All final assessments must be submitted to CareyOnline by 28 June at 11.59pm.

Assessment extensions must be submitted and approved by the Academic Registrar prior to due dates.

Please NOTE that the end of the semester has tighter deadlines than usual—the normal period to turn in assessments after due dates does not apply once the semester has ended. So, if you are unable to meet the Friday, 28 June deadline, please complete an Application for Extension to Complete Assement and email it to Neroli on neroli.hollis@carey.ac.nz.

It is critical that you talk to Neroli if you are unable to meet the 28 June assessment submission timeframe!

Semester one results will be released on CareyOnline after the end of the semester. Your Student Portal gives you access to your final course grades. If you require an actual transcript please also connect with Neroli Hollis.

Student Support Options

We want you to know that supporting our students is our top priority. As a reminder, here are some recent changes and additions to our Student Support Team.

Denise Tims and Jarrahmal Tanielu join the team in the roles of Student Support Advisors. Denise will have a primary responsibility for connecting with and supporting Māori students. Jarrahmal will have primary responsibility for supporting our Pasifika students. Both of them will also provide wider support for all students in partnership with our wonderful library support team: Siong, Mei Ling, and Anna. We are delighted to have Denise and Jarrahmal formally joining our student support team and spearheading our MPI student support.

Jacqui Fisher will also be supporting our CareyLocal students. Denise, Jarrahmal, and Jacqui all have prior experience in academic and pastoral support roles. Laurie Guy continues to support students, with a particular focus on ESOL support. And don’t forget our Peer Writing Assistants!

As usual, you can talk to any of our team, and they will ensure you are connected with the best person to help you in your studies.

There are still some student-rate tickets for the Psalms conference! Come along to our Psalms Conference, a three-day participatory event in July, and explore how the Bible’s songbook and prayerbook can inspire Christian worship and shape God’s people here in Aotearoa.

Course Evaluations

We regularly gather feedback for courses across our qualifications. Not all courses are evaluated every semester, but evaluations are open for the following courses:

Te Ao Māori
Christian Worldview
Gospels: John
Poverty, Transformation, and the Gospel
Humanity and Hope
Foundations of Youth Ministry
Missional Leadership

You will find the link to the evaluations in your respective Course Announcements forum. Surveys will close Wednesday, 5 June at 11pm. Please make completing these a priority.

Also, Neroli has promised chocolates to any student who completes a course evaluation—so, if you were wondering why there is a picture of chocolate up there, now you know.

Student Support Options

We are excited to let you know of some changes and additions to our Student Support Team!

Reminder about Due Dates and Extensions—Plan Ahead!

This is just a friendly reminder to check the due dates for assessments, and plan accordingly.

Assessments handed in up to one week after the due date are marked with 10% late penalty; assessments handed in between 7-14 days are marked pass/fail. Assessments handed in after the two-week period normally are not marked and receive a fail grade. So, be on time!

If you need an extension, please talk to your teacher and Neroli, and complete an application for an extension.

Celebrating jobs well done

Graduation was this past weekend, and a number of Carey graduates celebrated a job well done. It was a special time to reflect on the journeys that our graduating students have completed, having their whānau and support folks around them to honour the occasion. We are extremely proud of those who completed qualifications.

As you are in the throes of studying and putting in your own mahi, know that there is a payoff coming, and it’s so much more than the day you walk across that stage. You are hopefully being formed by God through your studies, and growing more into the likeness of Jesus day by day. Stay focussed, and keep pressing on, knowing each day is a win!

Tomorrow, 28 May from 9am-3pm is Open Day at Carey. If you are on campus, we encourage you to take a minute and welcome anyone new and share with them how awesome Carey is!

A note from our principal

Kia ora koutou,

I’m writing to let you know about two staff changes at Carey.

Andrew Picard will be finishing as Director of the Carey Graduate School at the end of this semester. Over these last 13 years, Andrew has made a very rich contribution to the Carey community, especially in the area of our Tiriti hikoi. Andrew has accepted the role of Manutaki Akoranga (Academic Director) at Te Kareti O Hoani Tapu Te Kaikauwhau i Te Rongopai / the College of St John the Evangelist.

He writes: “Aside from my family, Carey has been the biggest influence on my adult life…Leaving Carey is one of the hardest decisions I’ve made…I love and admire Carey…I will always be of Carey, and I’m proud to be so.” If you are enrolled for Revelation in semester 2, you need not worry. Andrew will teach this course as planned.

Eugene Fuimaono will also be finishing in his position as the Māori Student Support Advisor at Carey Baptist College. Eugene has taken a position with Communio, where he will work under and alongside his PhD supervisor, Dr Wayne Te Kawa. Eugene’s last day with us will be Wednesday 22 May. Eugene writes: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve in this role and to work alongside such dedicated colleagues and students…I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Carey Baptist College community for the support, encouragement, and camaraderie I have experienced during my time here.”

We are currently working on interim plans to ensure that our ongoing support for all students (and especially for Māori and Pasifika learners) remains strong and responsive, even without Eugene in this space.

We will miss Andrew and Eugene, and pray that the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit may be with them both as they move into this new season (2 Cor 13:14). If you have any questions about this news, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

It’s lecture time again!

We know it wasn’t a break, but we missed our regular lecture schedule over the Study and Reading weeks, and we missed seeing many of you in classroms and on Zoom. So, we are looking forward to getting back to our normal schedule, and hopefully you are too.

You've been hard at work, crushing those assessments, reading, and studying. Hopefully you did a bit of resting too. We are back to class next Monday, 6 May! Oh, and community lunches, and karakia! Woo hoo!

Carey Alumni Reunion

We mentioned the reunion for those who studied at Carey during the 1970s? Former Carey students will be getting together, and it’s happening this weekend!

What’s really cool is that next Monday, 6 May, these past alumni have been invited to join in the first half of lectures on-site. Also, they are joining for lunch with current students. So, if you are on-site Monday, 6 May, instead of Coffee, Cake, and Convo at 12.15, we will be having a free shared lunch with the 1970s Reunion crew. It’ll be a great time to meet some of them, hear their stories, and be encouraged by what God has done in their lives since they studied here.

So, come along, welcome your extended Carey whānau, and enjoy a mean feed.

With the alumni reunion on Monday, we’re having a shared lunch of butter chicken with the 1970s folks! But, we are also having our Tuesday lunch as a Carey whānau, and it’s gonna be lasagna. What a week ahead!

Hey Carey students! I’m Charis from the Baptist National Support Centre upstairs. In case you missed it on your Facebook group, we’re shooting footage for a 30-second Baptist NZ app promo on Thursday, 9 May from 10.30am-12.30pm.

We need volunteers for the ‘church notices scene’ and ‘after-church coffee scene’ we’re filming in the Carey chapel. Pretend to be at church, and get a $30 Prezzy card. Did you know that the NZ Baptist Union has created a new podcast of the 2024 karakia recordings? Well, they did. While we are sure you’ve watched the recordings many times already, now you can listen and share the podcast versions too!

We're through the first of our Study and Reading weeks, which continue through week 9 (ending Friday, 3 May). As a reminder, no on-site courses take place during this time, aside from the block course, Missional Leadership with Sarah and Elliot Rice from Monday, 29 April to Thursday, 2 May.

Time to Focus

There’s a break coming up in lectures. But, you know it’s not a break—it’s Study and Reading Weeks! You won’t be going to class, but you’ll be focussing in on those assessments. You’ll be reading and thinking. And you’ll be learning and growing. As you study and work to get things done, ask God to help you see more clearly, think more critically, and love others more fervently.

Make the most of the next three weeks. You’ll be glad you did!

Study and Reading Weeks

Beginning next week, Carey's Study and Reading weeks begin, spanning semester-weeks seven through nine, from Monday, 15 April through Sunday, 5 May. Lectures will resume in week 10, beginning Monday, 6 May. Also, there will be no weekly karakia and no community lunches during the next three weeks.

The following block course will take place on campus over the final week (week 9):

Welcome Back, Carey Alumni!

Did you know there is a reunion happening for all those who studied at Carey during the 1970s? Former Carey students will be getting together to connect and fellowship the first weekend in May.

What’s really cool is that on Monday, 6 May, these past alumni have been invited to join in the first half of lectures on-site. Even better, they are joining for lunch with current students. So, if you are on-site Monday, 6 May, instead of Coffee, Cake, and Convo at 12.15, we will be having a free shared lunch with the 1970s Reunion crew. It’ll be a great time to meet some of them, hear their stories, and be encouraged by what God has done in their lives since they studied here.

So, come along, welcome your extended Carey whānau, and enjoy a mean feed.

The Unifying Power of the Resurrection

32 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. 33 With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

(Acts 4:32-33, NRSVUE)

It’s quite a powerful thing, the resurrection. So many scandalous beliefs make up the Christian faith, but perhaps none moreso than Jesus’ utter contempt for death. No wonder the early church found such unity, because they saw their Saviour King step out of heaven, take on flesh, die, and walk again. What great power, indeed, in the resurrection, and what a gift that the same Spirit who raised Jesus is in and among us today.

As you go about your weekend—with whānau, at camp, studying, resting, whatever—soak in that power. May you find peace and assurance in the God who lives, and may you walk boldly in magnificent, unifying belief in the resurrection that unites us as followers of Jesus today.

Easter Schedule Changes

You’ve heard the “Week 5a/5b” stuff, right? If you’re confused, here’s a day-by-day of what’s going on at Carey the next couple weeks and how it affects you.

Carey will be closed for Good Friday, 29 March until Tuesday, 2 April. That means no karakia or community lunch next week.
We're back to business Wednesday, 3 April but with no classes.
The week of 8 April will bring us back to our regular schedule for week six of the academic term.
Study and Reading weeks are coming up, starting from 15 April until 3 May, weeks seven to nine of the semester.

Need Some More Light in the Morning?

Good news! Clocks go back an hour on Sunday, 7 April, as daylight savings comes to an end. If you are one of those who has clocks around your whare, analog watches, or if you don’t have your phone set to change automatically, change your clocks. Otherwise, don’t say we didn’t warn you. Enjoy an extra hour of sleep!

No Karakia Tuesday, 2 April

Since Carey is closed on Tuesday, there is no karakia next week. But, we will be back for a single week on Tuesday, 9 April. We will not have karakia during the Study and Reading Weeks.

Farewell, Tanya!

This week, we said farewell to a remarkable individual from our Carey community, Tanya Lameta. Tanya is moving into a new role with Emerge Aotearoa, an organisation that provides a wide variety of services to help communities thrive. Her presence will deeply be missed, as her time with us, first as a student and then as a staff member, has left an indelible mark. Tanya has contributed to our lives and ministry in countless ways—imparting wisdom, spreading warmth, sharing her culture and culinary skills, leading in worship, and showering grace to us all. She personifies Carey, and her essence will forever be inseparable from who we aim to be. We will miss you immensely, Tanya.

Going forward

Eugene, as the primary contact for Māori and Pasifika students, along with the library staff, will continue to provide support for all students at Carey. If you need anything, talk to Eugene, Anna, Mei Ling, or Siong in the library. We’ve got you!

Easter Schedule Changes

There are a few changes in our routine at Carey because of Easter this year, so let's walk through them together.

Everything runs as usual from Monday, 25 March to Thursday, 28 March.
Then, we take a break for Good Friday, 29 March, and will be closed until Tuesday, 2 April.
We're back on Wednesday, 3 April, but with a twist—no classes.
The week of 8 April will bring us back to our regular schedule.

And guess what's next? Study and Reading weeks are coming up, starting from 15 April until 3 May.

Want to be a Peer Writing Assistant?

One of the support mechanisms we offer at Carey is a Peer Writing Assistants (PWA) programme. If you are a second or third year student with strong academic writing, and a love for supporting other students, then being a PWA may be for you!

We are looking for three or four students to upskill in peer writing support. If you are interested in finding out more, please email Rob Ayres, Academic Director.

How Ya Feeling?

Hopefully you’ve gotten the hang of how things will go for the semester and are keeping yourself together. We trust you’re finding community among your teachers and your classmates. Class discussions are designed to be enriching and challenging, and we trust that God is growing you more whole and complete each day.

Questions about Recording Attendance

There have been some questions from students about why we record attendance in class. NZQA and TEC require all tertiary teaching organisations to monitor the attendance and engagement of all learners enrolled in their programmes. Part of the reason for this is because our funding varies depending on what mode of study you specified when enrolling (on-site, Zoom, or distance). That is why your teaching team record attendance for all sessions and block courses.

Attendance is NOT assessed in any way. We are simply required to record and track how engaged you are with your studies, and if a student isn’t engaging with classes (either live or via accessing the recordings) we are expected to follow up to check how you are doing. We would do this anyway, because we want you to successfully complete your studies. It’s difficult to be successful if you aren’t engaging with the course!

Give Thanks to the Lord

We’re two weeks in to the semester, and we’ve hopefully all gotten into our routines and rhythms. But as you are settling in, are you remembering to give thanks to the Lord? Getting to study the scriptures and being refined through engagement with teachers and other students are just a couple reasons to thank God this week. What’s on top for you?

Response to Student Evaluations

Each year, we evaluate our courses, gathering student feedback and listening to students. Specific feedback is given in class before the end of semester, and we publish the high level themes as well as summarise the response to those points. Take a look at Carey’s response to last year’s student evaluations.

Final Call for Change of Enrolment

Are you in the right level for your course? Something else off? If you need to make changes to your courses, complete an Application to Change Courses by this Sunday.

Assignment Help on CareyOnline

Did you know that along with the 10 Essentials on CareyOnline, there are sample assignments? Did you also know that you can increase your chances for better marks if you follow these examples? Hopefully you’re at least beginning to think and plan for upcoming assessments. Even if you aren’t yet there, take a look at what’s available to you.

If you've ever wondered how to write a stellar introduction, for example, there are tools that not only provide an example, but give you critical tips to make the most of each word. Check these tools out to help maximise your writing this semester.

The Semester is Under Way

Week one is in the books, and we are going full speed now. Classes are happening, and we’re all starting to find our rhythms for this new term. Formation groups are forming, karakia is bringing us together for worship, Zoomers are engaged in their classes, CareyLocal cohorts are growing together, and we’re all anticipating the great things God has in store for us all. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s take a breath and make sure all our ducks are in a row.

Have you heard of The Code?

The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, which we affectionately refer to as “The Code” lays out roles and responsibilities set out by NZQA for schools like Carey to support your wellbeing, development, and educational achievement. As a signatory of the Code, we have people and processes in place to help you in these areas. Learn more on our Student Support page.

Change of Enrolment and more

Are you in the right level for your course? Something else off? If you need to make changes to your courses, complete an Application to Change Courses, or if you need further help, flick an email to Neroli. She knows everything.

The Student Handbook has key information about your enrolment, fees, courses, and other academic and pastoral support. Be sure to check it out.

Support for You

You’ve no doubt seen the lovely folks in the picture above. Together, they make up our student support team. While you can’t see their capes, they are always putting in superhero-level efforts to help all our students flourish.

For general information about studying at Carey, help with finding books and articles, or basic administrative questions, the Library is the place to go. Mei Ling, Anna, and Siong are always keen to assist. They can also help with parking stickers and building access cards for on-site students.

For student support, such as writing essays, pastoral concerns, and more, connect with Tanya and Eugene. They assist all our Carey students, but are also there for our Māori and Pasifika students as well.

Did you know we’ve made all the First Steps videos available on CareyOnline? So, even if you’ve already completed the course you can watch them again. Ever thought to yourself, “Gee, I wish I could remember what that amazing video on how to reference a commentary”? Well, now you can watch all the First Steps videos anytime you want!

Raranga: Open Formation on Tuesdays

If you’re not already part of a formation group with your programme, you are welcome to attend Raranga on Tuesday mornings throughout the semester from 10-11am.

Raranga is the new name for our open formation group, and it means "weaving," as Carey is a place where we are woven together. We will get to know each other better, support one another prayerfully and practically, and do all sorts of things throughout the year. We will be delving into scripture, hearing from Carey staff, eating yummy things, giving mini sermons on the theology of donuts, going out for breakfast, and more. So, come along!
